چکیده

Black Saturns have multiple horizons and so offer a testing ground for the ideas of black hole thermodynamics. In this note, we numerically scan for phases that are in equilibrium by extremizing total entropy in the 2-dimensional moduli space of stationary, singly rotating black Saturns with fixed total mass and angular momentum. On top of the known TH = TR, ΩH = ΩR configurations, we find phases that do not balance the temperature and angular velocity of the ring and the hole. But these (and most of the balanced Saturns) go away when we demand that the system is metastable, by imposing that the Hessian of the entropy is negative definite. Metastablity occurs when the dimensionless total angular momentum lies in a narrow window 0.92457 < j < 0.92463 of the thin ring branch. This is consistent with the expected range of classical stability of black Saturns and therefore suggests à la Gubser-Mitra that thermal stability is tied to classical stability. We also comment on the possibility of constructing plasma configurations that are dual to black Saturns in AdS.

Quantum Black Holes: the Event Horizon as a Fuzzy Sphere

Modeling the event horizon of a black hole by a fuzzy sphere leads us to modify some suggestions in the literature concerning black hole mass spectra. We derive a formula for the mass spectrum of quantum black holes in terms of four integers which define the area, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charge of the black hole. Although the event horizon becomes a commutative sphere in the cla...

A Geometric Look on the Microstates of Supertubes

We give a geometric interpretation of the entropy of the supertubes with fixed conserved charges and angular momenta in two different approaches using the DBI action and the supermembrane theory. By counting the geometrically allowed microstates, it is shown that both the methods give consistent result on the entropy. In doing so, we make the connection to the gravity microstates clear. 1 Intro...

An Extreme Black Hole with Electric Dipole Moment

We construct a new extreme black hole solution in toroidally compactified heterotic string theory. The black hole saturates the Bogomol’nyi bound, has zero angular momentum, but nonzero electric dipole moment. It is obtained by starting with a higher dimensional rotating charged black hole, and compactifying one direction in the plane of rotation. Typeset using REVTEX email: [email protected]...

A pr 1 99 6 Chaos in Schwarzschild Spacetime : The Motion of a Spinning Particle

We study the motion of a spinning test particle in Schwarzschild spacetime, analyzing the Poincaré map and the Lyapunov exponent. We find chaotic behavior for a particle with spin higher than some critical value (e.g. Scr ∼ 0.64μM for the total angular momentum J = 4μM), where μ and M are the masses of a particle and of a black hole, respectively. The inverse of the Lyapunov exponent in the mos...
